Tribal Afshar Rug

Tribal Afshar Rug

Afshar weaving is extremely rich and varied, ranging from tribal domestic weavings through village rugs to large carpets. This attractive piece has the characteristics of a tribal weaving and dates to the last quarter of the 19th century. The foundation and pile is all hand spun wool, and all the colours are derived from natural dyes. The field design is composed of the ubiquitous offset rows of botehs. It is a common design but is beautifully drawn here with spontaneity. There are also elements of tribal character in the design including animal figures and random geometric ornaments. The colours are really delicious, in particular the soft terracotta seen predominantly in the field, light blue, and two shades of a burnt orange. The multiple borders frame the field perfectly and the whole composition is completed by the long banded kilims at each end. Its a lovely piece, which is both collectible and decorative. Minor signs of wear and a few old repairs, it is generally in good original condition.
