Fine Isfahan Rug

This group of antique Isfahan rugs is known as 'Mokabari' Isfahans. It is a finely knotted rug with high grade wool. Ostensibly, the design follows the medallion and spandrels format which one often sees on Isfahan rugs, but on this occasion there is a certain freedom to the drawing which suggests that it may have been woven in a village setting. The central medallion dominates the field and has a quirky irregularity in the design, while the anchors are squeezed in at each end. Even the spandrels and the flowers around the medallion have an impressionistic character, as does the main border. It's a charming composition where once again we see the talent of village weavers in Persia who are able to execute complex designs either from memory or by copying other rugs. The colour combination of this rug is subtle and very harmonious with only a handful of colours, Cherished over the generations, this piece has survived in relatively good condition with a velvety pile showing minimal signs of wear. Professionally cleaned.
