Very Fine Silk-Based Senneh Rug
19th century Senneh rugs come in a variety of qualities. This wonderful piece is at the top of the range. Woven on a silk foundation, it is very finely knotted in local Kurdistan wool and then clipped down to a low velvety pile. The dyes are exquisite, particularly the terracotta, greens, yellows and sapphire blue, and are all derived from natural sources. The classic Herati design with a central medallion is beautifully rendered, crisply defined and very easy on the eye. Likewise the main border with a repeating palmette and meandering vine design. This rug is an exceptional example of the group. In very good condition, and retains the original silk selvages.
