'Mishan' Melayir Carpet
Melayir is a town in West Persia which was known in the 19th century for producing fine rugs. The Mishan group were particularly admired for their exceptional quality and wool. This small carpet comes from that respected group. High knot count, fine glowing wool combined with a thin low clipped pile gives the design great definition. Note the wonderful shade of blue in the border, a colour I have rarely come across. Mishan Melayirs are rarely larger than a small rug size so this larger format makes it an additionally special item. The medallion design on an ivory ground is elegant and well drawn. The flowers are pretty and drawn in a charming style. Cherished through the generations, this carpet has survived in very good condition with only minor losses to the ends. The selvages have been replaced and there are small areas of minor restoration. But the work has been undertaken to a high standard and this fine piece is ready for immediate use.
