Exceptional Uratube Suzani

This exceptional silk embroidered suzani was clearly made as a dowry gift, and dates to around 1840. It was probably embroidered in the around the city of Uratube, Uzbekistan, as the the fuchsia dyes and design composition point to that region. The art of 'suzani' or needlework flourished in Uzbekistan in the 18th and 19th century as it was a major point along the silk road, and Uratube was one of the most important locations. Please look at the superb workmanship and absolutely lovely colours. As well the abundant use of fuchsia, one can see a wonderful aubergine, greens, yellows and pale blues. The design is expertly executed. The field is centred by an eight-pointed star medallion with flowers, and is surrounded my an elegant arrangements of floral blossoms and leaves, all arranged in a harmonious manner. The border repeats the same themes and adds to the elegance. Worked on a cotton foundation in silk with various stitches, this piece has survived in excellent condition. Professionally cleaned and lined.
