Fine Kurdish Wool Blanket

Fine Kurdish Wool Blanket

This lovely piece is an example of 20th century Kurdish weaving which appears to have gone somewhat under the radar. Woven in 2 narrow strips in plainweave, the wool is exceptionally soft undyed lambswool. It was primarily woven to be used as a blanket or possibly a shawl. I have only ever seen smaller examples which were most likely made to be used as shawls. The design is wonderfully simple yet complex at the same. The ostensibly plain abrashed brown field is framed at each end by stripes in shades of beige to brown. The sides are also patterned with geometric motifs and more plain stripes. However, closer inspection of the field and borders shows a complex yet subtle patterning which may not be noticed at a cursory glance, but would surely be seen by the weaver/wearer. This is a beautiful piece of tribal textile art which has an obvious resonance with modern aesthetics.
