Ottoman Embroidery
This lovely item is one of a group of Ottoman embroideries dating to the early 18th century. Woven in narrow panels, the ground is linen and the embroidery is worked in lovely shades of floss silk. The repeat floral pattern suggests the influence of Persian and Central Asian textiles, although it was probably produced in the Western part of Anatolia. Note how the design was first drawn on to the linen and them embroidered over. Covers of this type were used in many functional and decorative ways, as curtains, table and bed covers and even over doorways. This piece is rare in that it has survived in a complete state with the pale blue meandering vine border still intact. There is some minor damage to the linen background a few old stains, but the embroidery has survived in good condition. Professionally cleaned and relined on the back this lovely embroidery would make a wonderful wall hanging or cover in many kinds if settings.
