American Hook Rug
The American Hook Rug weaving tradition began with the early settlers to the United States. Derived from the English domestic weaving tradition, it was adapted and developed by the American settlers with designs that often depicted scenes from American life. The first hook rugs were made at a time when rural homes were almost entirely dependent upon themselves for the necessities of life including the weaving of rugs for decoration. This charming piece, from the second half of the 19th century. depicts a strawberry bush. It is drawn with great skill in a very naturalistic style. The materials used are linen or flax for the foundation, and linen for the pile.
