Seychour Rug

Seychour Rug

This rug is a beautiful example of 19th century East Caucasian rug weaving, and in particular of this group of Seychour rugs. It has many outstanding features. The wool is soft and velvety and the weave is fine. The dyes are absolutely exquisite, as perfect as one could expect from natural dyes of the region. And they have retained their richness and brilliance as can be seen by a comparison of the back and front. In particular, the abrashed green is really wonderful. The design is also very attractive, beautifully drawn. Note the reciprocal border in lovely light blues and pinks. However, the field design is the more interesting as it is one of the rare occasions where one sees the influence of textile design in rug ornamentation, in this case 18th century Caucasian textile design. In terms of condition, it is in generally good condition with good pile. There is some corrosion in the brown dye as one would expect in a rug of this age, and there has been some minor restoration in places. It has been professionally cleaned in our workshop. This wonderful rug is both a collector's item and a decorative beauty.
