Bakshaish Carpet
This room-size Bakshaish carpet from North-West Persia dates to around 1880, and has many very attractive features. The background to the main field is a nice soft red which is centred by an archaic geometric central medallion. Stylised floral and plant ornaments surround the medallion. The spandrels are also very attractive, in a lovely mid-blue which is filled with stylised leaves and plants. But probably the most attractive part of this carpet is the stunning main border. The honey yellow background is decorated with serrated leaves and stylised blossoms, and frames the field composition perfectly. The overall impression is of a light and happy carpet with a lovely balanced design. It would work equally well in a traditional or contemporary setting. The size is excellent. Woven with lovely lustrous wool, the structure is very solid, and has survived the generations in excellent condition. Professionally washed recently which brought out the richness and variegation of colours in the natural dyes. This carpet is a real gem.
