Karabagh Rug

Karabagh Rug

This impressive 19th century Karabagh rug has all the hallmarks one could wish for from a rug of this period. The handspun wool is soft with a chunky pile. The dyes are all natural and have produced wonderful saturated colours. In particular, the yellows, greens and light blues are delightful. Note the dark brown wefts and plaited kilim at one end which all point to a weaving date in the last quarter of the 19th century. However, the most outstanding thing about this piece is the striking design. The central row of hooked diamond medallions is complemented on both sides by matching halved diamond medallions. The design feels archaic and very pure. There are very few filler ornaments. And there is a wonderful reciprocity in the interaction of the latch hooks. The ivory main border with a classic serrated leaf and 'wine glass' border is well drawn and typical of Karabagh rugs of this period. All in all, this is a fascinating rug with great presence. The condition is excellent. It has been professionally cleaned.
