Fine Silk Kashan Rug
Silk Kashan rugs are among the finest and most appealing of the so-called Persian city rugs. This example was woven in the early 20th century. The taupe background in the field is centred by a teardrop medallion which is surrounded by arabesques, leaves and other floral ornaments. Unusually, the spandrels are very different to the medallion with floral elements on a mid-blue background. The abrashed border varies in shades of red from a rich scarlet to purples and pinks, and is filled with beautifully drawn birds and deers, and more floral ornaments. The angular drawing of the design, particularly in the field, is reminiscent of earlier Mokhtashem rugs from which it appears to have taken inspiration. The whole composition exudes sophistication and luxury. Showing some signs of minor wear, it is nevertheless in good usable condition and would make a wonderful wall hanging or addition to your decorative scheme.
