Exceptional Isfahan 'Seirafian' Miniature Rug
The master weaver 'Seirafian' is regarded as one of the greatest Persian carpet makers of the 20th century. Known for his fine workmanship, astonishingly soft wool and charming interpretations of classical themes, his signed rugs have a strong collector following. This wonderful miniature example has all the hallmarks of the best Seirafian pieces. It is woven on a silk foundation with the finest 'Kork' wool. There is an engaging party scene in the foreground, and the famous Abbasi Great Mosque Isfahan, first built by Shah Abbas in the early 17th century, in the background. Note the signature with Persian flags on the bottom. An unusual feature is the miniature size which I have rarely encountered in Seirafian rugs, ideal for flexible use. One can imagine it hanging in a quiet spot or lying on a surface. In excellent condition, and with a wonderful tactile quality, this piece is a rare beauty.
